During your trip you'll find a fascinating mix of the old with the new, with historic buildings, stunning modern architecture, impressive museums and a lively night life. Being a strategic harbour during the Second World War much of the city centre was destroyed by heavy German bombing as they sought to quickly occupy the Netherlands. After the war the determined population employed architects to restore the city's former glory and as a result around the centre you'll discover striking modern architecture such as the Cube Houses, De Markthal and Erasmus Bridge. To the west of the centre you'll discover Rotterdam's medieval past in the harbour area known as Delfshaven. This picturesque marina was fortunate to escape the bombing and still contains many historic building. It also marks the location where in 1620 the Pilgrim Father's set sail on their voyage to settle in America.
